Where the mind anchors the soul! – For Penable Magazine!💝

Greetings everyone!! I hope y’all are doing well!

As you might know, Phoenix, an amazing lady with a brilliant mind and a more brilliant blog just introduced us to her new idea…Penable magazine!

Here is a short story, written in response to auditioning for getting your work published in the amazing Penable magazine! It’s for you, Phoenix! Here it goes..

Where the mind anchors the soul…

Things are often different than what we expect them to be. So we should put ourselves out there rather than thinking of the worst possibilities.

In a beautiful and lively street in Honolulu, Hawaii, lived a young, shy boy, William. He was an introverted little boy who preferred to stay at home with his grandma.

On standing on the front porch of the house, you could see a lingering Canal that led to the State library. If you looked from the top window, you could see the formations formed by the black, shiny fish that inhabited the canal. Sometimes, the formations were like little bows and sometimes, they resembled wings of a bird. William loved everything about it and he loved his grandma more than anything!

One fine Monday morning, William’s grandma felt a bit too weak to do the chores. “William, would you get me these books from the Waikiki-Kapahulu Library please?”, she said, handing over a piece of paper to William. It had the following book titles:

1. Mill on the Floss – George Elliot

2. The artichoke hearts – Sita Brahmachari

3. Around the world in 80 days – Jules Verne

4. Ink death – Cornelia Funke

5. A million little pieces – James Frey

Not being a very social kid, William was pretty scared at first, but he loved his grandma too much!

He took out his brand-new bag and put the following things in it- His grandma’s phone number, his address, a bottle of lemonade and a sun hat.

He set out and on his way, he saw a homeless man, sitting near the canal. “Would you like some lemonade?”, William asked, holding out his bottle. The man accepted it gladly. William, felling pretty pleased with himself, carried on.

As he reached the library, he turned away, disappointed. It was Monday! The library was closed!

As he turned around, a sense of serendipity filled his head and he put on his widest similes. He saw his grandma waiting for him in the car! “Come on, William! How did you enjoy the trip to the library!?”, she called out !

And it turns out, she only sent him to the library so that William could experience the fresh air and the liveliness of Honolulu, where the mind anchors the soul!

I hope you enjoyed this story. This one is pretty close to my heart as we went to Hawaii just 2 years back and an incident there inspired me to write this story. I will be talking more about it in my next post!
